Good example of Val McDermid's early work. Using her great imagination, Val McDermid sets the table for her future dark, character-driven British crime fiction. As well as the romantic tension between cranky pants Carol Jordan and the cerebral Tony Hill. This novel is not as gruesome as some of Val McDermid's other books.

Håkan Nesser seems to delight in vague settings and in using a multitude of names. However, if the reader can get pass this folly, Håkan Nesser’s characters will make for a thrilling read.

You Don't Know Jack unless your have read the other Private series books. While this fast read lacks the usual flair of Private, it does keep the series viable for future adventures.
