Week Fifty-Two - 0 to Go

Setting is a small town, where John Sandford presents rural life with intense honesty. The teen character, J.J. Skinner, could become a potential Virgil Flowers. Hope the reader like pot pies.

Week Fifty-One - 1 to Go

Due to the verbose plot, this may not be the best WWI Nurse Bess Crawford Mystery. But a delightful new character, Australian Sergeant Larimore, saves the day.

Week Fifty - 2 to Go

Helen Brann did a good job of picking up the ball and completing this Spenser novel. But Helen Brann is no Ace Atkins. While the voice is close to that of Spenser, the book comes up short regarding the Spenser humor.

Week Forty-Seven - 5 to Go

Desperate measures, indeed. Placing the focus of this novel on the murders of several blonde females, Stuart Woods desperately attempts to fill pages with a shallow story line. But true to Barrington's material wealth, the crew (Dino, Viv, and Stone’s latest tryst) visit swanky restaurants, use custom cars, and provide housing for Stone’s employees.

Week Forty-Nine - 3 to Go

Stan Lee, a cultural icon, was born Stanley Lieber. Bob Batchelor notes how Lee’s wife, Joanie, played a decisive role in encouraging him to become a comic book revolutionary. Bob Batchelor did well in presenting this account of a legend.

Week Forty-Eight - 4 to Go

Doris Kearns Goodwin is an excellent wordsmith which makes her latest title an extraordinary read. Mining the lives of four U.S. presidents, Lincoln, both Roosevelts, and LBJ, Goodwin gives examples of how leadership is driven by great difficulties.

Week Forty-Five - 7 to Go

Seems like ages since Barak Obama was President. For Democrats, these photos will bring back pleasant memories. As Pete Souza posts on his Instagram page: Throw some shade and then vote.

Week Forty-Four - 8 to Go

In Walking Shadows, Faye Kellerman continues the Decker saga. But the lack of suspense and an unsatisfactory ending sapped my interest.

Leaf-Peeping 2018

After Book Club Joan and I made our way to The Edge in Port Leyden.
View from our room 102.
Note - clicking on photos enlarges them

After settling in we went into Lowville NY for diner at Jeb's. Returning to the motel we had a cup of coffee and a good night's rest.

The next morning we had breakfast at The Pioneer Cafe in Glenfield NY.  Victoria (Torie) was our waitress. Joan had the Homestead and I had an omelet.
Then we drove to Camp Michael.

View of the front yard.

We continued down the Stillwater Road to Stillwater. The water level is extremely low.
Retracing our drive we continue along the Stillwater Road to the opening at the Stillwater Reservoir. The water on the right side was draining into the left side.

Once in Eagle Bay went to The Tobaggan Inn for lunch. The place was packed. Seems everyone was using the day to view the Fall colors. We then went to the Arrowhead Park in Inlet.
View from the pier.

Then on to Old Forge.

Returning to The Edge, we freshened up and went out to dinner at The Pine Tree Inn.
On Thursday morning we returned to The Pioneer Cafe in Glenfield NY for breakfast.
We both had the Homestead.
Pastels on the wall

Before heading home, we stopped at the Tug Hill Vineyards. There Mike Marion, the owner, unlocked the tasting room for us. He explained that a bus tour had just arrived and someone would be with us soon. After we replenished our supply of Lake Effect wine, we headed for home.
Guard (but friendly) Dog

The heavens have opened up, perhaps a residue from Michael. The Thruway was busy with trucks. We went to Doug's for dinner, Emily, Michael and Lily joined us. We had apple fritters for desert.
