These
annual bird hikes are led by Professor Paul Richardson. This activity
is sponsored by the Professional Growth and Scholarship Committee of
the Cayuga Community College Faculty Association.
This
year the walks were conducted on Monday, May 6, Wednesday, May 8, and
Friday, May 10. The day's group met at the gazebo at 11am and then
walked on the Nature Trail until noon.
The Monday
group had 8 participants. 15 species were seen: Mallard, Turkey Vulture,
Chimney Swift, Downy Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebe, American Crow,
White-breasted Nuthatch, House Wren, American Robin, European Starling,
Yellow Warbler, Song Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, Common Grackle,
Brown-headed Cowbird.
The Wednesday group had 11
participants. 15 species were seen: Canada Goose, Mallard, Downy
Woodpecker, Blue Jay, Tree Swallow, Black-capped Chickadee, House Wren,
American Robin, European Starling, Northern Cardinal, Red-winged
Blackbird, Common Grackle, Brown-headed Cowbird, American Goldfinch.
The
Friday group had 5 participants. 15 species were seen: Canada Goose,
Downy Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebe, Blue Jay, American Crow, House Wren,
American Robin, Gray Catbird, Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Northern
Cardinal, Common Grackle, Brown-headed Cowbird, American Goldfinch,
House Sparrow.
Although every day it threatened to rain it
never materialized. Each day's grouping was unique; outside of myself,
no one was a return participant. Professor Richardson is a very
knowledgeable birder with a pleasant approach to novices. Always fun to
bird close to home.
