Montezuma Audubon Center
On my way to the scheduled MAC bird hike I stopped at Muckrace. The water level being extremely high prohibited duck activity. Heading west on Savannah Spring Lake Road saw an Osprey dive into Malone Creek Trail pond. It was successful. Followed the Osprey towards Rt. 89. There the Osprey landed in a tree and had breakfast.
After arriving at MAC and registering went to view the bird feeders. There viewed a Baltimore Oriole, American Goldfinches, Red-winged Blackbirds, House Sparrows, two Grackles, and three White-crowned Sparrows.
Chris Lajewski, MAC interim director, and Amy Barra, MAC Education director, welcomed the group of 18 birders and led us outside.
We made our way to the lone tree near the ponds and there was our first look of Spring.
We continued as the trail made its way between Sandpiper Swallows and Merganser Marsh. There was a Kingfisher perched upon a nest box and a Sandhill Crane flew overhead. Passing the swamp several Painted Turtles were sunning themselves. This was a photo opportunity for many.
Heading North we followed Warbler Walk. There a Rose-breasted Grosbeak gave us a good look. Also, a Song Sparrow, Yellow Warbler, and Swamp Sparrow were seen. The highlights of Warbler Walk was an Orchard Oriole and a Barred Owl that was clearly heard.
Orchard Oriole
We came onto my favorite tree and some trillium.
Wolf Tree
Trillium erectum
Trillium grandiflorum
Chris concluded the walk was explaining the MAC effort to reforest the woods.
Another great day for birding.
