Birding - Montezuma Refuge Area

Left home early. Start to sprinkle as I crossed the Thruway overpass into the village of Montezuma.

As I pulled into Muckrace Flats, noted the water was high but had a quick view of two Wood Ducks.

Deep Muck observation deck was a bust. Martens Tract also was barren with the exception of the Tree Swallows and the Eastern Bluebird fighting over the nesting boxes.

After a pit stop at Tschache Pool, drove back to Mays Point. There in the dead wood was the highlight of the day - the return of the Red-headed Woodpecker. It gave me a quick glimpse and then made its way to a tree near the road for a better view.

Went to Armitage Road looking for the Prothonotary Warbler. Did not see it but might have heard it. In the tree cover photographed this bird.
Dave Spier confirmed it is a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

As I made my way to South Spring Pool there was a Juvenile Bald Eagle in a tree along Rt. 89.
Walking into South Spring Pool met up with two birders. These fellows said that they saw a Palm Warbler near the pond. I saw several Yellow Warblers and this Common Yellowthroat.
Another great day for birding.
